Reasons to use your host DNS

I’ve been running a web host company since Dec 2011 and I have noticed an increased amount of users using their own DNS services.  Most likely their domain registrar DNS, while this is a great way of getting high redundancy in your DNS it has a huge pros and the cons.  So I’ll tell you a little bit about it.
Reasons to use your host DNS

  1. Your host may migrate your account to maintain system stability and uptime.
    • This may cause mins of downtime but migrating you may prove to give your service far greater uptime.
  2. Most web host already provide redundant DNS.
    • Ask you host if they have redundant DNS and whether there 2nd DNS server is offsite.
    • Do a host lookup on the name servers and check the geographical location of the ip. This should be enough to determine whether your host has a safe DNS system.
  3. By using your own DNS you could cause your own account time. While it maybe not your fault, but by using your own DNS makes it not your host fault. Your paying for your web host, so let them manage everything for you.

Reasons to use your own forms of DNS

  1. Your host doesn’t have true redundant DNS and/or DNS is on the same box or same site.
    • While a host may have redundant DNS on site there DNS could have downtime if the Data center experiences trouble.
  2. You host doesn’t allow certain customizations you need.
    • If you go this route I suggest you purchase or use a free monitoring system to insure maximum uptime.

Now I’m sure there are more reasons but I just wanted to bring this topic up and share it with the world.  So I hope you web host users are aware of this and make the right decision based on your needs.

Choosing the right web host

Time after time I see people all over the web asking people to recommend a web host or questions like who is the best host.   So I’m going to write this blog to help some of you figure out how to find your web host.

Finding a web host is kind of liking buying a new cars.  Your not going to buy the best car out there as there is really no such thing.  Your going to buy the best car for you and your family.  Well that is exactly how to pick your web host.   Web Host come in many different forms sizes, but all in all the all have the same shape.  What I mean by shape that all share similarities.

So Lets ask some probing questions on finding your host.

  1. How much space do I need?
  2. Do I need a web hosting control panel?
  3. Do I need something well documented and easily understood?\
  4. Do they offer a guarantee or money back offer?
  5. How is the customer support?
  6. How is the uptime?
  7. What software do I require? PHP, ASP, etc.
  8. Are the resources I’m buying realistic?
  9. How big is my site and will it stay within there cpu, memory resources?
  10. Is the host overall quality?

Those are some of the most important questions to ask a host.

So now you know the questions likes talk about some of the marketing gimmicks host do to increase sells.    Lots of web host out there sell “Unlimited Hosting”  Thats right Unlimited bandwidth and unlimited disk space.  Then you have to ask your self does such a thing exist.  Simple answer no.

So lets talk about bandwidth.  How can host sell so much bandwidth?  Well the truth is they can’t sell unlimited bandwidth.  Unmetered bandwidth sure.  unmetered simply means they will not monitor or suspend you based on your bandwidth usage.   Bandwidth is like a freeway and you can only fit enough traffic on the free way and if you add more than it can handle traffic is forced to slow down.   Lets think about your home internet and lets say you have 5 computers, TV, and Phone using your internet with only a 10mb download speed.  You have all five computer downloading musics, games, etc while watch Netflix on tv and all the sudden it starts to do the buffering stage and interupts your movie.  So annoying.  Well my friends this is the same way with Web Host.  If they sell more than they truely have then can happen.  How ever if a company has good administrators they can make adjustments on the fly reducing these network traffic jams.

Now on to disk space.  Unlimited disk space are not real.  Go to newegg.com or tigerdirect.com and see if you can find a unlimited hard drive.  You can’t.  So again this is another marketing gimmick to beaware of.  Most host tell people to not buy unlimited hosting but buying unlimited hosting can be okay if you know and aware of these things and how to encounter them.  While I recommend buying what you need within your resource needs and look for quality support.

Above all you should also consider how popular your website is going to be.  If you are starting out this shouldn’t be to much of a worry.  But you really don’t watch your website averaging over 1% cpu usage or peaking over 25% cpu usage for more than 20secs.  If you exceed those limits I can assure you that your account will get suspended.  While this seems unfair this is a must for host to do to maintain stability of the Shared Hosting Server.  So if those limits are getting hit then talk to your host to see if they can upgrade you to a standalone server such as vps to dedicated.

There are a few web hosting companies I can recommend.

A couple of these companies I have experience with and other companies just have great reviews on them.  Also check out the biggest web hosting forum in the industry for help.

So I hope I’ve shed some light on the topic and wish you all happy hosting!
